You may forget, or not even be aware of the things happening around you during your labour. Your focus will narrow, especially as you make your way through transition. See what your care providers are doing while they wait for your baby to crown. See the look on your face as you see your baby for the first time. Never forget the kiss from your husband in that moment.
Your birth partner is going to have a difficult time taking photos while attending to you. Hiring someone else, ensures that he/she can be there for you 100 percent. As a bonus, you will have photos of the two (and three) of you.
You may find yourself feeling more self-conscious if you have your sister take the photos than if you hire someone who has attended multiple births. We’ve seen it all, so you can birth uninhibited.
While you may feel like a whale, if you saw yourself through someone else’s eyes, you would see the strength, beauty and femininity that surrounds you during labour. A photographer is able to portray this using professional equipment and techniques, ensuring that the images display the goddess you are.
I would give anything to feel the weight of my child in my lap as we sit together, turning the pages of his birth album, recounting the story of the day I first met him. I made the mistake of dismissing the idea of hiring a birth photographer and will always regret it. Based on the awe on my son’s face when we look at his baby photos, I know that having those images would have been a treasured heirloom for him.
